RV Park Near Des Moines

Locating an RV park near Des Moines, IA with full hook-ups, and have it be available in November was no easy task. The weather starts getting cold in October, and the RV parks don’t want frozen water lines causing damage. That being said, we were able to find one option that offers heated water hoses and leaves their facilities running year round. Griff’s RV Park is located off a paved highway between Altoona and Ankeny, IA and was perfect for our November stay in Iowa.

We did have the option to stay one of the state parks, but we were told there were no hook ups available. We would have loved to stay at Walnut Woods State Park, but that will have to be a summer location. The location is on prime real estate in West Des Moines, and has water nearby for fishing, as well as trails for hiking. Its hard to compare a State Park to an RV Park, so we will save that for another time.

RV Park Campgrounds Near Des MOines

The location of Griff’s RV Park is absolutely perfect. It is close to the outlets in Altoona for shopping, along with amazing restaurants in both Altoona and Ankeny. Its also a 20 minute drive to the west end of town for high end shopping, dining and entertainment. Griff’s is less than a 30 minute drive to all the entertainment central Iowa has to offer.

The location was incredibly important for our first trip in the Transcend 29TBS. We left a few necessities in the toy hauler, so we made several trips to nearby retail stores. You will hopefully be more prepared than we were. This was our first trip in a new rig.

One item we didn’t have in either camper is a 90 degree elbow for our hoses. The water lines come out of a heated box in the ground at Griff’s, and our hose was too stiff to make the turn to come out of the hose box. (I ended up ordering some Camco 90 degree elbows so we don’t have that problem again.)

Originally we didn’t plan on staying at Griff’s. We looked at several other RV parks in central Iowa, but the majority had already shut water off at the facilities. I am glad they did because our second option was a State Park on the southwest side of Des Moines. It would have been a longer drive to all the areas we visited.

RV Park Near Des Moines With Amenities

There were a lot of amenities available at Griff’s. Our spot was located directly across from the Lodge, which featured shuffleboard, pool, TV and laundry facilities. There were also vending machines available so nobody gets parched while playing pool. We were unable to find another RV park near Des Moines offering similar features. There was also a pond that looks like it will make a great fishing spot when the weather warms up.
