While in Iowa in November, we stayed a week at Griff’s RV Park in Altoona, IA. The park is conveniently located off a paved highway between Altoona and Ankeny. We had full hook-ups for November and enjoyed our visit! This is our Griff’s RV Park review.
The location of Griff’s RV Park is perfect. Its only 30 minutes to any of the main areas around Des Moines. Both Ankeny and Altoona provide a wealth of shopping and food. Downtown Des Moines is less than 30 minutes away and Ames (to the north) is also only 30 minutes away. We also were close enough to make a quick trip out to Jester Park in Granger, Iowa.
Our visit to Iowa was in November when the weather was cold and there was a good possibility for snow. I had a difficult time finding an RV park that offered full hook-ups during November. Most parks I checked only offered electric past the beginning of November. While Griff’s closes some of their spots during the colder months, they still had quite a few sites that offered full hook-ups.
Griff’s RV Park offered several nice amenities. Two laundry room facilities and a gym were available. There is also a game room with a shuffleboard table, a pool table and a few arcade games. A small pond made a perfect place to walk the the dogs or may be good fishing in nicer weather. A big field is off to the side of the RV park which could be used for letting the dogs run or for a fun game of baseball.
When driving into the park, there are many available sites that are fairly close together. When you get further into the park, the spaces are more spaced out and there are several ‘culd-a-sac’ type areas with spots. We had a pull-through site with a nice large grassy area. There were not fire pits available (at least that I noticed) nor did I notice any picnic tables or covered outdoor shelters. (I don’t know if there are any available during the summer months.)
Cell Phone Service & Internet
My only complaint with Griff’s RV Park is the cell phone and internet service. Cell reception for T-Mobile was great in the Des Moines area but it was slow while in the RV. We had to pay an additional $15 for internet wifi service and it did not work well. Our slow cell phone service worked better than the wifi but it was not fast enough for work. We had to leave the RV park and work elsewhere. It also could have been the great insulation in our Transcend 29TBS because the phones worked better outside.
Griff’s RV Park Review – Final Thoughts
As always, we met a few nice people at the park. Since the weather was cold, there were fewer people out enjoying the outdoors but we had a couple quick conversations with others we met. It does appear there are longer term residents throughout the park as some RV’s have decks built or more permanent RV skirts to protect against the colder weather. The park was clean and well kept. There were trees throughout.
Would we stay here again? Absolutely!!
